From my experiment using WMP 9 to connect to mms://tv.manager.co.th/videoclip/radio/1002/1002-2158.wma and use ethereal to sniff the packet, result in the following conclusion,

When issuing mms://host/path.wma on WMP 9, it will first try,

1. rtsp:// protocol port 554 (yes, it try rtsp://, rather than mms://),
2. then mms:// protocol port 1755,
   1. if the server version is 9.xx.xx, the WMP will disconnect, and report network error.
   2. if the server version is 7.xx.xx, the WMP will continue the negotiation.
3. http:// protocol port 80.

If force mms://host:1755/, WMP will try

1. rtsp on port 1755,
2. then mms on 1755,
3. http/1755,
4. rtsp/1755 again.
